The short answer

Jobs for BSW graduates start with case management, child welfare casework, community program work and care coordination, and none of them needs a master's degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the national median at $45,930 for human service assistants and $59,550 for child, family and school social workers, and 41 states plus the District of Columbia license social workers at the bachelor level.

If you are a social work major or a BSW holder asking what the degree gets you on the job market, the answer is broader than "social worker." Jobs for BSW graduates cut across child welfare, health care, housing, aging services and nonprofits, and most of the jobs for BSW holders hire on the bachelor's alone, so an accredited program is the only box to check. The details below come from the pay data on our salary pages, the licensing data on our credentials page, and the career profiles on our careers pages.

What Jobs Can You Get With a BSW Degree?

With a BSW degree you can get jobs in case management, child welfare, community services, aging and disability services, behavioral health support, school and hospital support roles, and licensed bachelor-level social work. Each row in the table links to the profile of that BSW job, with the BLS occupation it is counted in.

Nine jobs for BSW graduates, whether each needs a license, and the pay of the BLS occupation it is counted in. Pay is the national median for that whole occupation, BLS OEWS, May 2025.
Job Needs a license? Median pay of its BLS occupation
Case manager and care coordinatorUsually not$45,930
Community and social service workerUsually not$45,930
Social and human service assistantNo$45,930
Aging, disability and veterans' services workerUsually not$45,930
Behavioral health and substance use support specialistUsually not for support roles$60,280
Child, family and child welfare caseworkerVaries by state and agency$59,550
Licensed bachelor social worker (LBSW)Yes, for the title$59,550
School social worker (support roles)Often, with a master's for the full title$59,550
Hospital care coordinator and discharge plannerOften, for the title$67,880

The pattern in the table is the point of the BSW. Four of the nine jobs sit in the lowest-paid BLS occupation and need no license, and the licensed BSW jobs and hospital roles sit higher because they carry a protected title or a clinical setting. Our guide to what a BSW degree is and what it qualifies you for covers the curriculum behind that range.

Which BSW Jobs Do Not Require an MSW or a License?

The BSW jobs that do not require an MSW or a license are case manager, care coordinator, community and social service worker, social and human service assistant, and aging, disability and veterans' services worker, with behavioral health support roles close behind. Their pages on this site list the license requirement as "usually not" or "no," and the entry education as a BSW or related bachelor's degree.

  • Case manager and care coordinator. You assess what a client needs, build a service plan and follow up until it works, in hospitals, health plans, community health centers and housing programs. Our case manager career page has the duties and settings.
  • Community and social service worker. You screen people for eligibility, run food, housing or youth programs, and link residents to services, mostly at nonprofits, community action agencies and government offices.
  • Aging, disability and veterans' services worker. You help clients enroll in benefits such as Medicaid, Medicare and VA programs and set up home and community services, usually through Area Agencies on Aging and independent living organizations.
  • Behavioral health support specialist. You coordinate recovery plans and run groups under clinicians, and you stop short of diagnosis and therapy, which belong to a master's and a clinical license.
  • Human service assistant. You are the front-line contact who completes intakes and helps clients through paperwork, and the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook profile covers this work for people with a range of education levels, which a BSW sits at the top of.

Is Child Welfare Caseworker a Good First Job for BSW Graduates?

Child welfare caseworker is a good first job for BSW graduates because state and county child welfare agencies frequently hire at the bachelor level. Caseworkers investigate reports of child safety concerns, manage foster care and adoption cases, make home visits and prepare court reports, and the work is counted by BLS under child, family and school social workers, an occupation of 392,550 people with a median of $59,550.

Many accredited BSW programs also take part in Title IV-E child welfare stipend programs, which pay tuition in return for a commitment to work in public child welfare after graduation, so ask your program about it before the senior year. The trade-off is the caseload. Child welfare is a fast way to log real casework hours, and the caseloads are demanding, so a supervisor you trust counts for as much as the salary. The child welfare caseworker page has the day-to-day tasks.

Do Jobs for BSW Graduates Require a Social Work License?

Most jobs for BSW graduates, accredited degree or not, do not require a social work license, but the job title "social worker" often does. The Association of Social Work Boards lists a bachelor-level license in 41 states and the District of Columbia, and in most of them a CSWE-accredited BSW plus the ASWB Bachelors exam earns the license. Passing it adds a protected title and qualifies you for agency posts that are posted as licensed positions.

9 states have no bachelor-level license in the ASWB database: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. A BSW still counts toward case management and caseworker jobs there, since employers set their own requirements, and Illinois, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey and Utah list bachelor-level licenses that do not require the ASWB exam. Check the board for your state on our credentials page, because titles, exams and supervision rules differ from one board to the next.

Accreditation is the part you control. Employers and boards that name a BSW usually mean an accredited BSW, one from a program in the CSWE directory of accredited programs, and every school on our ranking of the best BSW programs is drawn from it, so an accredited program there keeps the licensed jobs for BSW graduates open to you.

How Much Do BSW Graduates Make in 2026?

BSW graduates make a national median of $45,930 in human service assistant and case management jobs, $59,550 in child and family casework, $60,280 in behavioral health and $67,880 in healthcare social work, on the BLS count for May 2025. BLS publishes pay by occupation and not by degree, so every figure includes people with master's degrees, and a first-year BSW salary usually lands closer to the 25th percentile column.

BLS occupation 25th percentile Median 75th percentile Employed
Social and human service assistants$38,150$45,930$54,350437,860
Child, family and school social workers$48,270$59,550$76,070392,550
Mental health and substance abuse social workers$47,070$60,280$79,730132,810
Healthcare social workers$56,710$67,880$82,240187,630

Our BSW salary guides break each role down by state and by years of experience, and the longer argument about whether those numbers justify the tuition is in is a BSW worth it in 2026.

Which States Pay the Most for BSW Jobs?

The states that pay the most for BSW jobs are in the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic. For child, family and school social workers, BLS reports the highest medians in Connecticut ($78,970), Maryland ($76,390) and New Jersey ($76,280), and the lowest in Arkansas ($43,330) and Oklahoma ($43,950). The same pattern holds for the assistant occupation, led by District of Columbia ($59,460), Washington ($54,770) and Oregon ($51,230).

Cost of living absorbs part of that gap, so compare the pay with local rent before you move for a job. If you have not chosen a program yet, the state pages on our BSW program rankings show where the accredited programs are, and an agency near the school is usually where the practicum, and often the first job, comes from.

What Is the Job Outlook for BSW Graduates?

The job outlook for BSW graduates is good: the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects social worker employment to grow about 7% from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations, with roughly 67,300 openings a year. Demand clusters in health care, behavioral health and child and family services, which are the settings in the table above.

When Do Jobs for BSW Graduates Stop and the MSW Begin?

Jobs for BSW graduates stop where the work becomes clinical: diagnosing, providing psychotherapy and practicing independently all require a master's degree and a clinical license. The same line explains why many school social worker titles and hospital social worker titles ask for an MSW, as the school and hospital pages in the table note, while support and care coordination roles in the same buildings hire bachelor's graduates.

If you reach that line, a CSWE-accredited BSW shortens the road, since advanced standing programs let you skip the generalist year and finish in about one. Read our guide to advanced standing MSW programs for BSW graduates for the windows and GPA floors, and use the first job as the way to fund and test the decision.
