Advanced standing MSW programs are the biggest return on choosing an accredited BSW, and the people searching for them are usually juniors and seniors asking whether their degree qualifies and how much time it buys. The figures below come from the accreditor's directory and from the admission pages of programs that publish their rules.
What Is an Advanced Standing MSW Program?
An advanced standing MSW program is a shortened Master of Social Work for graduates of accredited BSW programs, built on the principle that generalist content taught once at the bachelor's level is not taught again. CSWE's description to prospective students is that if you have a BSW, you may be eligible for an advanced standing program that allows you to complete your MSW in just one year, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that some programs allow graduates with a bachelor's degree in social work to earn their master's degree in under two years. A regular standing MSW is two years and at least 900 field hours. Advanced standing enters the second of those years directly.
The mechanism is a policy the accreditor requires rather than a courtesy. Under the 2022 standards, an accredited master's program has a policy to ensure that students from CSWE-accredited baccalaureate social work programs do not repeat generalist content at the master's level that has been achieved at the baccalaureate level. Your BSW's 400 practicum hours and nine competencies are what you are being credited for, which is why the option is closed to unaccredited social work majors and every other bachelor's degree.
Does Every Accredited MSW Program Offer Advanced Standing?
Every accredited MSW program is required to offer advanced standing, because accreditation standard M4.1.3 states that the program offers advanced standing to graduates holding degrees from baccalaureate social work programs accredited by CSWE. CSWE puts it more loosely on its guidance page, that most schools offer an advanced standing option, which will save you time, but the standard itself is not optional. In the accreditor's directory, 331 of the 350 accredited MSW programs (94.6%) list advanced standing as a plan of study, in 50 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
The 19 listings without the flag are best read as directory entries that omit the option, since the standard applies to every accredited master's program, so ask the admissions office rather than assuming the door is shut. What does vary, legitimately, is the eligibility window, the GPA floor, and how many credits the BSW is worth.
How Many Advanced Standing Options Are Online?
229 advanced standing MSW programs list an online option, which is 69.2% of the 331 programs that list advanced standing at all. Online advanced standing is available in 47 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and the 4 states with an advanced standing program but none listed online are Rhode Island, U.S. Virgin Islands, Vermont and Wyoming. The master's level is far more online than the bachelor's, where 149 of the 538 accredited BSW programs list an online option, so many students do a campus BSW and an online MSW.
- Online option listed 229 · 69%
- Campus only 102 · 31%
Online changes the classroom, not the calendar or the practicum. Case Western's online part-time advanced standing MSW is completed in two years over five semesters, twice its one-year on-campus track, and the field hours in any format happen in an agency.
Which States Offer the Most Advanced Standing Options?
California has the most advanced standing MSW programs with 22, followed by Texas with 21 and New York with 20. Counted by online availability the order shifts: Texas (15), New York (15), California (14) and Pennsylvania (13) lead. The table ranks the 10 states with the most advanced standing programs, with the online subset, and links each state to its BSW ranking.
| State | Advanced standing programs | Also online | Share online |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | 22 | 14 | 63.6% |
| Texas | 21 | 15 | 71.4% |
| New York | 20 | 15 | 75.0% |
| Pennsylvania | 16 | 13 | 81.3% |
| Illinois | 16 | 8 | 50.0% |
| Minnesota | 14 | 9 | 64.3% |
| Florida | 13 | 8 | 61.5% |
| Michigan | 13 | 7 | 53.8% |
| Massachusetts | 12 | 7 | 58.3% |
| North Carolina | 11 | 6 | 54.5% |
Counts follow population, but the state you did your BSW in does not limit you: advanced standing is granted on the accreditation of the bachelor's, which is national, and the online column means a graduate in a state with two programs can apply well beyond its borders. The master's programs themselves are compared on our sister site's ranking of advanced standing MSW programs.
Who Is Eligible for Advanced Standing?
Eligibility for advanced standing MSW programs rests on three things: a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program, a degree recent enough to fall inside the program's window, and a GPA above its floor. The accreditor fixes the first and leaves the other two to each school.
| Program | BSW earned within | What else the page requires |
|---|---|---|
| Baylor | Five years | 2.7 cumulative GPA, 3.0 in social work coursework, B or better in practice and internship courses |
| Virginia Commonwealth | Five years | 3.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA |
| Portland State | Five years | 3.00 GPA in BSW coursework and 2,000 hours of human service experience |
| Carlow | Seven years | 3.0 undergraduate GPA |
| Florida State | Seven years | A waiver submitted before applying if the BSW is older than seven years |
| Pittsburgh | Ten academic years | A B or higher on 400 practicum hours to receive the six practicum credits |
| Case Western | Every BSW holder is considered automatically | Full advanced standing status by default, finishing in as few as 39 credit hours |
The window is the rule people miss. VCU opens advanced standing to applicants who earned a BSW from a CSWE-accredited institution during the previous five years with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0, and Baylor and Portland State draw the same line. Carlow allows an undergraduate social work degree earned within the past seven years, Florida State requires students who graduated with a BSW more than seven years ago to submit a waiver before applying, and Pitt accepts a social work degree completed within the last ten academic years. Work for a decade before the master's and the five-year programs treat you as a regular standing applicant. Portland State alone adds 2,000 hours of human service experience at the time of application, from paid work, internships or volunteering.
How Many Credits Does Advanced Standing Save?
Advanced standing saves between a third and two fifths of the MSW's credits at the programs that publish both totals. Virginia Commonwealth offers regular standing at 60 credit hours or advanced standing at 42, a saving of 18 credits or 30%. Portland State's MSW is a 78-credit program, or 46 credits with advanced standing, a saving of 32 credits or 41%. The advanced standing totals across the programs checked run from 30 credit hours at Baylor through 39 at Case Western, Pitt and Carlow to 42 at VCU and 46 at Portland State.
Some programs count the saving as credits awarded. Pitt's advanced standing students can receive up to 15 academic credits and six practicum education credits, the practicum credits conditional on 400 hours of practicum experience and a passing grade of B or higher, and full advanced standing finishes with a minimum of 39 credits. Saint Louis University applies 15 credits toward the degree, fulfilling the generalist courses. Either way, the generalist year is the part you have already done and the specialized year is the part you pay for.
How Long Does an Advanced Standing MSW Take?
An advanced standing MSW takes about one year full time, and the programs that publish a calendar land between 10 and 18 months. Baylor states that full-time advanced standing students can complete their MSW in 10 months on its 30-credit-hour advanced standing program. Case Western's on-campus full-time advanced standing program is completed in one year over three semesters, fall, spring and summer, and Carlow's full-time advanced standing track finishes in as few as 18 months for its 39 credits.
UNC-Chapel Hill shows the shape of that year. Its advanced standing students complete 13 credit hours over the summer before joining the final-year cohort in the fall: a condensed summer of transition courses, then the same specialized year the two-year students are entering. Part-time tracks double the calendar, as Case Western's two-year online option does, so an advanced standing MSW taken part-time ends up as long as a regular MSW taken full-time.
How Can BSW Students Prepare for Advanced Standing?
BSW students should prepare for advanced standing MSW programs by protecting three things from sophomore year on: the accreditation of the bachelor's, the social work GPA, and the practicum grade. Accreditation comes first, and the CSWE directory is the list to check. Every program on our ranking of the best BSW programs and ranking of online BSW programs is drawn from it, and the BSW degree guide explains what the accredited curriculum contains.
- Watch the social work GPA separately. Baylor's 3.0 applies to social work coursework, with a B minimum in practice and internship courses, and Portland State's 3.00 is measured on BSW coursework alone.
- Treat the practicum as graded, because it is. Pitt's six practicum credits require a B or higher on 400 hours, so the senior-year placement described in our guide to BSW field practicum hours is also an MSW application.
- Count the window from graduation. Five years at VCU, Baylor and Portland State, seven at Carlow and Florida State, ten at Pitt. If you plan to work first, note the date your eligibility lapses.
- Log human service hours as you go. Portland State's 2,000-hour requirement accepts paid work, internships and volunteering, and a BSW practicum plus a part-time agency job can cover it by graduation.
Where the degree fits in the larger ladder is set out in our guide to the social work degree at every level, and whether the bachelor's pays off is argued through in whether a BSW is worth it.
