The short answer

A BSW degree is the bachelor's in social work accredited by CSWE, and it is the degree the profession treats as its entry ticket. You study nine competencies set by the accreditor, spend at least 400 hours in a supervised field placement, and graduate eligible for the bachelor-level license in 41 states and the District of Columbia and for a one-year advanced standing MSW. 353 of the 538 accredited programs title it exactly that, Bachelor of Social Work, and the rest call it a BA or a BS without changing what it qualifies you for.

Someone searching for a BSW degree is usually weighing it against a psychology or sociology major. The difference is that the BSW is a professional degree with an accreditor, a fixed curriculum framework and a license at the end. This page explains the degree itself, and the programs that award it are listed and ranked on our directory of accredited Bachelor of Social Work programs.

What Is a BSW Degree?

A BSW degree is a four-year bachelor's degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, and CSWE describes it as the minimum requirement for most social work positions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the same from the hiring side: a BSW is the most common requirement for entry-level nonclinical social worker positions. The accreditor's directory lists 538 accredited programs across 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam, and 222 of them (41.3%) have held accreditation since before 1980, so this is a settled degree. It is still growing: 53 programs were first accredited in 2015 or later, 20 of them since 2020.

Accreditation is what makes it a professional degree rather than a liberal arts major: CSWE sets the competencies every program teaches, fixes the field hours, and reviews each program on a cycle. An unaccredited social work major cannot get you a license or advanced standing, however similar the course list looks. Our comparison of the BSW and the psychology degree walks through that difference.

Is Social Work a BS or a BA?

Social work at the bachelor's level is most often neither a BS nor a BA but a degree in its own right, the Bachelor of Social Work. Counting the title each program reports to CSWE, 353 of the 538 accredited programs (65.6%) award a Bachelor of Social Work, 92 award a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work or a BASW, 75 award a Bachelor of Science in Social Work or a BSSW, and 18 offer both an arts and a science title. Abilene Christian University, for example, awards a Bachelor of Science in Social Work and prepares graduates to apply for the LBSW, which is exactly what a program titled BSW does.

Bachelor of Social Work: 353 (66%) Bachelor of Arts (BA or BASW): 92 (17%) Bachelor of Science (BS or BSSW): 75 (14%) Both an arts and a science title: 18 (3%)

The letters do not change the degree. A BA, a BS and a BSW from accredited programs meet the same standards, carry the same 400-hour practicum, and qualify for the same license and advanced standing. The title reflects how the university files the program, and the accreditor sets the core either way.

What Do You Study in a BSW Degree?

In a BSW degree you study generalist social work practice, organized around the nine competencies in CSWE's 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards. The standards adopt a competency-based education framework identifying nine social work competencies, each with a set of behaviors a program has to show its students can perform. The list starts with Competency 1, Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior, includes Competency 3, Engage Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Practice, and closes with four practice competencies, numbers 6 through 9, that cover engaging, assessing, intervening with and evaluating practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.

Generalist is the word to hold onto. EPAS says baccalaureate programs provide students with strong generalist practice knowledge, values, skills, and cognitive and affective processes, and defines generalist practice as grounded in the liberal arts and the person-in-environment framework. In course-catalog terms, the Bureau of Labor Statistics summarizes it as teaching diverse populations, human behavior, social welfare policy, and ethics in social work, plus supervised fieldwork. You do not specialize at this level: concentrations belong to the MSW, and the BSW is built to make you competent across settings first.

How Many Field Hours Does a BSW Degree Require?

A BSW degree requires at least 400 hours of field education, because the accreditation standards state that the field education program provides a minimum of 400 hours for baccalaureate programs and a minimum of 900 hours for master's programs. The bachelor's floor is 44.4% of the master's floor, which is one reason advanced standing exists. EPAS calls field education the signature pedagogy for social work, and programs often run above the minimum: Christopher Newport University's majors complete 448 hours of field work across the fall and spring of senior year.

The practicum is where the BSW stops behaving like a normal major. The hours happen in an agency during its working day, under a field instructor, and a job you already hold cannot replace them: the program does not grant social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience. How the hours fall across the senior year and who arranges the placement is covered in our guide to the BSW field practicum.

What Are the Bachelor of Social Work Requirements for Admission?

Bachelor of Social Work requirements for admission come in two stages: admission to the university, and then a separate application to the social work major, usually after the first two years. The second gate is the one that matters, and the table shows what five accredited programs ask for at that point.

Admission requirements for the BSW major at five accredited programs, from each program's own page. Each row is cited for that program only.
Program GPA floor When you apply Also required
Appalachian State 2.5 overall and 2.5 in social work Before the professional sequence At least a C in every foundation course
Arkansas State 2.75 overall After 45 semester hours College coursework on record
Batten University 2.5 overall and in the major Spring of sophomore year Application to the major
Grand View University 2.5 The semester you finish the prerequisites SWRK 101, ENGL 101, PSYC 101 and SOCS 101, an essay and a faculty recommendation
Delaware State 2.50 After two years of undergraduate study Application to the program

The pattern is consistent: two years of general education and introductory courses, then an application to the major with a GPA floor between 2.5 and 2.75. Grand View adds that admission is selective and involves an application with a personal essay and a recommendation from a non-social work faculty member, and Batten notes the application is typically completed by spring of sophomore year. Miss that window and you wait a year.

Is a BSW Hard to Get?

A BSW is not hard to get into, and it is harder to finish than the GPA floors suggest. Admission asks for a 2.5 to 2.75 and a few introductory courses. The difficulty sits later, in three places. The first is the practicum: 400 or more hours in an agency during business hours, which collides with any job you hold and cannot be waived for experience. The second is the professional sequence, where Appalachian State requires at least a C in all foundation courses and checks the social work GPA separately from the overall one.

The third is the exam. In 35 states and the District of Columbia the bachelor-level license takes the ASWB Bachelors exam, and among first-time takers in 2025, 2,741 sat it and 70.4% passed. Roughly three in ten did not pass on the first attempt, which is a fair measure of the content, even if the door into the major is wide. Plan for the senior year, not the application, as the hard part.

How Many Credits Is a BSW Degree and How Long Does It Take?

A BSW degree is 120 credits and takes four years full time, with roughly half the credits in social work and half in general education. Temple University's program runs 120 credits including 54 credits of professional courses in social work, four years full time or approximately six years part time. Methodist College splits its 120 credit hours 51 in general education and 69 in social work across eight semesters. The social work share varies, so two accredited degrees can differ by fifteen professional credits.

The calendar bends more than the credit count. 330 of the 538 accredited programs list a part-time plan and 149 an online option, and the part-time BSW guide shows how the two overlap. Nothing shortens the 400 practicum hours, so a faster or slower calendar reshuffles coursework around a fixed senior year. What Does a BSW Degree Qualify You For?

A BSW degree qualifies you for entry-level generalist social work jobs, for a bachelor-level license in most states, and for a shortened MSW. CSWE's summary is that in most states you can be licensed with a BSW, which prepares you for practice at the generalist level. Counting the ASWB regulatory data, 41 states and the District of Columbia issue at least one bachelor-level credential, titled LBSW in 19 states and LSW, LSWA, CSW or similar elsewhere. ASWB describes its Bachelors exam category as a baccalaureate social work degree upon graduation, so you can sit it as soon as you finish, and in 36 states and the District of Columbia the credential explicitly requires a CSWE-accredited degree.

What the bachelor-level license does not allow is clinical work. 45 of the 54 bachelor-level credentials recorded are marked as not permitting diagnosis, and therapy, private practice and the clinical title sit behind the MSW plus post-master's supervised hours. The BSW's second qualification is the route there: the accreditation standards require every accredited MSW program to offer advanced standing to accredited BSW graduates, which cuts the master's to about a year, and our guide to advanced standing MSW programs lays out the eligibility rules. Where the degree fits in the wider ladder is in our overview of the social work degree at every level, and the programs are ranked on the national BSW ranking and by state from the rankings index.
