Can You Earn a BSW Part-Time in 2026?

Most people asking about part-time BSW programs are already working, often in a human services job that a social work degree would formalize. The question underneath the question is whether a Bachelor of Social Work can be earned around a paycheck. It can, at the majority of accredited bachelor's programs, and the numbers below come straight from the accreditor's own directory rather than from program brochures.

Can you earn a BSW part-time?

You can earn a BSW part-time at 330 of the 538 programs accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, which is 61.3% of every accredited bachelor's program in the country. The directory asks each program to declare its plans of study, and part-time is the second most common answer after full-time. The remaining 208 programs list full-time study only, and one program, Maryville University, lists part-time study without a full-time plan at all.

Two things follow from that share. Part-time BSW programs are not a niche product you have to hunt for, so there is no reason to accept an unaccredited program because it advertises flexibility. And because CSWE accredits the program rather than the schedule, a part-time plan inside an accredited program produces the same Bachelor of Social Work, on the same transcript, as the full-time plan at the same school.

What does part-time mean in a BSW program?

Part-time in a BSW program means carrying fewer credits each term than the full-time plan, and it says nothing about when the classes meet. The CSWE directory records four plan-of-study options beyond full-time, and they answer different questions: how much you take at once, when you sit in class, and how often the program admits a new group.

The gap between the first row and the third is the one to notice. A part-time plan at 330 programs sounds like flexibility, but at most of them the classes still meet on weekdays during the day, spread across more semesters. Only 47 programs, 8.7%, commit to evening or weekend meeting times. If your job runs nine to five, the third row is the one that decides whether the degree is possible, and the directory lets you filter on it.

47 accredited BSW programs offer evening or weekend classes, and 2 of them, New Mexico Highlands University and Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras, schedule the entire program on weekends. That is 8.7% of the field, roughly one accredited bachelor's program in 11, so in many states the choice comes down to a single school.

Read the label carefully before you plan around it. "Weekends/Evening" in the directory means the program offers classes at those times, not that every required course is available then. Ask the program for a sample degree plan showing which sections of the practice, policy, research and human behavior courses meet after hours, and whether the sequence can actually be completed without a daytime section. A program that puts half its courses in the evening has not solved your schedule, it has moved the problem to junior year.

Which states have the most part-time BSW programs?

Pennsylvania has the most part-time BSW programs, with 22 of its 30 accredited programs listing a part-time plan, followed by Texas and New York with 19 each. The table ranks the 10 states with the most part-time options, alongside the total number of accredited programs in each, so you can see the share as well as the count.

Volume follows population, so the big states lead, but the share column is the more useful read. A state where two thirds of programs run part-time gives you a real choice between schools; a state where the count is one gives you a school. At the other end, Wyoming has no accredited part-time BSW at all , because its only accredited program lists full-time study alone, while every accredited program in Maine, Alaska and Nevada offers a part-time plan. Is an online BSW the same as a part-time BSW?

An online BSW is not the same as a part-time BSW, and the directory keeps the two apart for good reason. Online describes where the coursework is delivered; part-time describes how much of it you carry per term. Of the 149 accredited programs with an online option, 121 also list a part-time plan and 28 are full-time only, so an online BSW can demand the same weekly load as a campus one. Running the overlap the other way, 209 of the 330 part-time programs have no online option, which means most part-time BSW programs still meet in a classroom.

The practical rule is to check both fields. A working student in a rural county may need online delivery and a reduced load together, and only 121 programs, 22.5% of the field, declare both. How long does a part-time BSW take?

A part-time BSW takes as long as your credit load dictates, because CSWE accredits the curriculum and the competencies rather than the calendar. A full-time Bachelor of Social Work is a four-year degree, as most bachelor's programs are, and a plan carrying half the load each term roughly doubles the time; most part-time students land somewhere between those two points by taking a heavier load in some terms than in others. Cohort timing matters more on a slow plan than on a fast one. 79 accredited programs admit more than one cohort a year, and at those schools a missed application deadline costs you a term. A part-time BSW does not affect licensure or advanced standing, because both are decided on accreditation rather than on pace. 42 of the 51 US jurisdictions license social workers at the bachelor's level, and the requirement in each is a bachelor's degree from a CSWE-accredited program plus the ASWB Bachelors examination. Advanced standing works the same way. Graduate programs admit advanced standing students on the strength of a CSWE-accredited BSW, which lets them skip the generalist year and finish an MSW in about a year instead of two. The accredited degree is the ticket, and a part-time transcript is an accredited degree. What can matter is recency and GPA, since some MSW programs want the BSW completed within a set number of years and above a stated grade average, and a long part-time calendar pushes the graduation date later. Choose between part-time BSW programs on how each handles the senior year, because the coursework is the easy half of the problem. Four questions separate a plan that works around a job from one that only looks as if it does:

• When do the practicum hours run? Ask which agencies took part-time students last year and whether any offered evening or weekend hours. A program with a large public child welfare or hospital network has more room to schedule than one with a short agency list.
• Is an employment-based placement allowed? If you already work in a human services agency, some programs let the practicum run at your workplace on new duties under a different supervisor. Programs that permit it approve it in advance, so ask before you enroll rather than in junior year.
• Are the after-hours sections guaranteed? At the 47 programs listing evening or weekend classes, request the sample degree plan and confirm every required course has a section you can reach.
