The short answer

A fast-track social work degree online shortens the coursework and leaves the field work alone. Accelerated BSW programs compress classes into 7- and 8-week terms, admit new students up to six times a year, accept as many as 90 to 93 transfer credits, run through the summer, and in degree-completion form take students who arrive with an associate degree or 54 to 60 credits and deliver the social work major in about two years. What no accredited program can shorten is the practicum: CSWE requires at least 400 hours in an agency, and it bars social work credit for life or work experience. Every timeline on this page is read against those two rules.

The label "accelerated BSW programs" covers two different things, and admissions pages rarely say which. One is a shorter term: the same course squeezed into seven or eight weeks instead of sixteen. The other is a shorter degree: a program that admits you with two years of credit banked and teaches only the major. Both are real. Neither touches the part of a Bachelor of Social Work that takes longest, the supervised field placement, and that is where most fast-track promises fall apart.

How Fast Can You Get a BSW Online?

How fast you can get a BSW online depends almost entirely on how many credits you bring with you, because the social work major has a floor that no accredited program can lower. Starting from zero, Touro University Worldwide, which runs 8-week terms all year, says its online BSW can be completed in approximately three and a half years by a full-time student taking 12 credits a semester for three semesters a year. That is 36 credits a year, and 120 divided by 36 is 3.3 years of coursework, which the university rounds up once the practicum sequence is counted.

Arrive with an associate degree and the picture changes. The University of Nebraska at Omaha designs its fully online BSW for students who have completed at least 60 credit hours, and says the social work portion is built to be finished in two years while the Bachelor of Social Work itself remains a four-year degree. With maximum transfer credit, Capella estimates 21 months and King University advertises as few as 16 months. Both of those figures are explained, and qualified, further down.

You are choosing from a real market. 149 of the 538 BSW programs accredited by the Council on Social Work Education list an online option, spread across 39 states and Puerto Rico, and they are compared on cost, completion and outcomes in our ranking of online BSW programs.

What Does an Accelerated BSW Program Actually Compress?

An accelerated BSW program compresses the term, the calendar and the wait to start, and it leaves the credit count alone. Three mechanisms do the work, and most accelerated BSW programs use at least two of them.

What none of this compresses is the degree itself. Methodist University's online BSW carries 124 credit hours and a listed duration of 3.5 years. King's totals 124 semester hours with 52 in the major. EKU's and TUW's run 120. An 8-week term holding the same three-credit course as a 16-week term means twice the reading each week, so "accelerated" describes the pace, not a discount on the work. If the pace rather than the calendar is the problem, our guide to part-time BSW programs covers the opposite trade.

How Do Degree-Completion BSW Programs Shorten the Calendar?

Degree-completion BSW programs shorten the calendar by declining to teach the first two years at all: you arrive with general education finished and the program delivers only the social work major. That format is behind most two-year claims accelerated BSW programs make, and the entry rules tell you who it is for.

What accelerated and degree-completion online BSW programs ask you to bring, and how much of the degree they will let you transfer. Program pages read October 2, 2026.
Program Entry or transfer rule What the page says about pace
University of Nebraska at Omaha At least 60 credit hours, general education and prerequisites done Social work portion designed for two years
SUNY Brockport At least 54 credits, or an AA, AS or AAS Online degree completion
Simmons University 72-credit completion program 425-hour practicum at about 16 hours a week
King University At least 45 semester hours to start the major, 124 in total Mostly 5-week classes, as few as 16 months full time
Eastern Kentucky University Up to 90 transfer hours, at least 30 of 120 at EKU 7-week terms, six starts a year
Methodist University Up to 93 transfer credits, at least 31 of 124 at Methodist 8-week terms, 3.5 years
Touro University Worldwide Up to 90 semester credits, no more than 45 of them general education 8-week terms, six starts, about 3.5 years from zero full time
Capella University Up to 120 of 180 quarter credits 10-week quarters, 21 months with maximum transfer credit
University of Maine at Presque Isle Timeline applies to students who already hold a bachelor's degree 18 to 24 months for bachelor's holders

The arithmetic to run before you believe any timeline is total credits minus what you bring. EKU lets you transfer up to 90 hours and requires at least 30 of its 120 be completed there. Methodist will transfer up to 93 credits toward 124, leaving 31. TUW accepts a maximum of 90 semester credits, no more than 45 of them general education, leaving 30. Capella's cap of 120 quarter credits is two-thirds of its 180, or 80 semester credits at its conversion of 1.5 quarter credits to one. In every case the remainder is roughly the social work major, and the major is where the field hours live.

Why Can't the 400 Field Hours in a BSW Be Accelerated?

The 400 field hours in a BSW cannot be accelerated because they are a count of hours rather than a count of credits, and the Council on Social Work Education fixes the count. The 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards require that the field education program provides a minimum of 400 hours of field education for baccalaureate programs, and 900 for master's programs. An 8-week term can hold a three-credit policy course as easily as a 16-week term can. It cannot hold 400 agency hours unless you spend 50 hours a week in placement.

Those hours are supervised, in person and on the agency's schedule, which is why the placement is the one piece of an online BSW that is not online. How the hours are arranged and who supervises them is covered in our guide to the BSW field practicum.

The same standards give working students one concession. Where a program permits it, student assignments and employee tasks may qualify as field hours when directly linked to the nine social work competencies, so a case aide may be able to do the practicum at work, under a different supervisor and on new duties. That eases the schedule. It does not reduce the 400.

How Many Hours a Week Does a Fast-Track Field Placement Take?

A fast-track field placement takes 25 hours a week if the 400 hours are spread over one 16-week semester, and 50 hours a week if a program tries to fit them into a single 8-week term. The table shows the arithmetic for the schedules programs actually publish.

Weekly placement load implied by the CSWE 400-hour minimum on different calendars, and by the hours three online programs publish.
Schedule Hours Weeks Hours per week
CSWE minimum over one 16-week semester 400 16 25
CSWE minimum over one 8-week term 400 8 50
Methodist, 200 hours per 8-week term, over 2 terms 400 16 25
Simmons, 425 hours at about 16 a week 425 about 27 16
TUW, three 150-hour traineeships, each with a practice course 450 three terms 150 per term

Simmons states its senior practicum as over 425 hours (approx. 16 hours/week), roughly 27 weeks in placement, longer than a semester and at a pace a working student can hold. Touro University Worldwide splits field education into three 150-hour traineeships, each paired with a practice course, and requires the agency be arranged at least 6-7 months prior to the beginning date desired. That lead time caps speed: a TUW student who transfers in the maximum 90 credits has 30 left, under a year at 36 a year, but cannot finish faster than three practicums and their booking windows allow.

Which Accelerated Online BSW Timelines Should You Read Carefully?

Three accelerated online BSW timelines deserve a careful read before you plan around them: Methodist University's 8-week field claim, King University's 16 months, and the University of Maine at Presque Isle's 18 to 24 months. None is false. Each means less than it first appears to.

Methodist's field placement. The online program page says your internship will consist of 200 hours per 8-week term, which is 25 hours a week across 2 terms. The FAQ on the same page says the program requires a 400-hour field placement completed over an 8-week term, which would be 50 hours a week, more than a full-time job. The university's own field practicum page settles it: students complete a minimum of 400 hours of field work with a weekly seminar and work in their agencies the entire semester. Plan on the semester, and get the field office's answer in writing.

King's 16 months. King says that with most classes five weeks long, students can finish in as few as 16-months of full-time study at only $16,000 in total. The same page requires a minimum of 45-semester hours to start the major, and the degree totals 124. A student entering at that minimum has 79 hours left, about 59 semester hours a year to finish in 16 months, far above a full-time load. The 16 months and the $16,000 are for someone who transfers in far more than the minimum.

UMPI's 18 to 24 months. The University of Maine at Presque Isle says bachelor degree holders can complete our BSW program in as little as 18-24 months. That is a second bachelor's degree for people who already have one. If you are coming from an associate degree or from high school, it is not your timeline.

Capella's 21 months belongs in the same category: the page labels it the estimate with maximum transfer credits, meaning 120 of 180 quarter credits already earned. Read every headline duration as "for the student with the most credit we accept" unless the page says otherwise.

Can Transfer Credit or Life Experience Shorten a Social Work Degree Online?

Transfer credit can shorten a social work degree online by as much as two-thirds, and life experience cannot shorten the social work major at all. The accreditation standards are blunt about the second point: an accredited program does not grant social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience. So when Avila says its Prior Learning Assessment may help reduce your tuition and time to completion, the credit it can award lands on general education and electives. Ten years running a shelter earns nothing toward the practice sequence, the research course or the 400 hours.

Transfer credit is a different matter, and the caps accelerated BSW programs publish show the room: 90 of 120 at EKU and TUW, 93 of 124 at Methodist, two-thirds of the degree at Capella. Ask for a written degree audit showing which of your credits apply, which requirements remain, and how the field sequence falls across the terms left. If that audit puts you at the program's minimum residency with the practicum still ahead, you have found the real floor for your finish date. The wider choice of degree is laid out in our guide to social work degrees.

How Do You Pay for Year-Round Study in an Accelerated BSW?

You pay for year-round study in an accelerated BSW the same way you would pay for a conventional one, with one federal rule in your favor. Federal Student Aid states that in certain situations, an eligible student can receive up to 150 percent of his or her scheduled Pell Grant award for an award year, which funds the third term a fall-and-spring calendar never needed. Speed does not change the price per credit: accelerated BSW programs bill a 120-credit degree the same at 8-week terms as at 16, and what accelerating saves is years of fees and a year or two of earning as a graduate. The per-credit prices, and what each includes, are compared in our guide to the cheapest online BSW programs.
