The short answer

A social work degree comes at five levels, and where each one leads is fixed by accreditation and licensing rather than by the school. The associate degree prepares you for paraprofessional work, the BSW is the minimum for most social work jobs and licenses you at the bachelor level in 41 states and the District of Columbia, the MSW is the degree every clinical license requires, and the two doctorates split between practice (the DSW) and research (the PhD). CSWE accredits the BSW, the MSW and the DSW, and the directory now lists 538 accredited BSW and 350 accredited MSW programs.

Most people searching for a social work degree already want the job and are trying to work out which degree gets it. The level matters more than the school: a bachelor's qualifies you for casework and a bachelor-level license, a master's is the gate to therapy, and the doctorates are for people who already hold the MSW.

What Is a Social Work Degree and Which Levels Exist?

A social work degree is a credential in a licensed profession, and it exists at five levels: the associate degree, the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), the Master of Social Work (MSW), the Doctor of Social Work (DSW) and the PhD. The Council on Social Work Education describes the two doctorates as a practice doctorate, usually called the DSW, and the research PhD. What separates the rungs is scope: each level is tied to a tier of state licensure and a set of jobs, so choosing a level is choosing a ceiling until you climb to the next one.

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Generalist practice such as casework, and the bachelor-level license Yes, 538 programs
Master of Social Work (MSW) Clinical practice and the master's and clinical licenses Yes, 350 programs
Doctor of Social Work (DSW) Advanced practice, entered after the MSW Yes, since the 2021 to 2025 pilot
PhD in social work Academic, research and administrative positions No

What Does an Associate Degree in Social Work Qualify You For?

An associate degree in social work qualifies you for paraprofessional work rather than for a social work license. CSWE's own description is that associate degree programs prepare students for paraprofessional-level positions in social service agencies, and the accreditor does not accredit them. The job it feeds is the one the Bureau of Labor Statistics files under social and human service assistants, where some employers prefer an associate's or bachelor's degree in human services and the median wage was $45,930 in May 2025. Moving from that role into a social worker title takes the bachelor's or master's, so treat the associate degree as a head start on the BSW rather than a destination.

What Does a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Qualify You For?

A Bachelor of Social Work qualifies you for generalist practice and for a bachelor-level license, and CSWE calls it the minimum requirement for most social work positions. The accreditor's directory lists 538 accredited BSW programs across 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam, led by Texas (34), New York (30), Pennsylvania (30) and Ohio (25). It is a four-year bachelor's: Temple University's runs 120 credits with 54 in social work, four years full time or about six part time, and every accredited program includes at least 400 hours of supervised field education.

What the BSW does not do is license you for therapy. In 41 states and the District of Columbia the degree plus the ASWB Bachelors exam earns a bachelor-level credential, titled LBSW in 19 states and LSW, LSWA, CSW or similar elsewhere, while 9 states and Puerto Rico, which are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, New York, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington, issue no bachelor-level license at all. What the degree covers is in our guide to the BSW degree, and the programs are ranked on the national BSW ranking.

What Does a Master of Social Work (MSW) Qualify You For?

A Master of Social Work qualifies you for clinical practice and for every license above the bachelor tier. CSWE is direct about the gate: clinical work typically requires an MSW, completion of a license exam, and supervised hours after the master's, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics agrees that clinical social workers need a master's degree, supervised clinical experience, and a state license. The program itself is two years with a minimum of 900 hours of supervised field instruction, and the directory lists 350 accredited MSW programs.

You do not need a BSW to apply. CSWE says any bachelor's degree will allow you to continue your education and work toward an MSW. What the BSW buys is time: a graduate of an accredited BSW is eligible for advanced standing, which allows you to complete your MSW in just one year, and 331 of the 350 accredited master's programs list that option. At Virginia Commonwealth University the MSW is 60 credit hours in regular standing or 42 with advanced standing. How the shortened route works, and who qualifies, is covered in our guide to advanced standing MSW programs.

What Is the Difference Between a DSW and a PhD in Social Work?

The difference between a DSW and a PhD in social work is the difference between a practice doctorate and a research doctorate. CSWE describes PhD programs as typically research-oriented, preparing students for academic, research, or administrative positions, while the practice doctorate is for people who stay in practice. Programs choose their own degree title, but most designate DSW as the degree awarded.

Both doctorates sit after the MSW and after time in the field. The University of Pennsylvania, which in 2007 became the first social work school in the country to offer the DSW as a practice doctorate, requires an accredited MSW and three years of post-MSW practice experience to apply. Neither doctorate is a licensing step: the clinical license is earned on the MSW, and a doctorate adds no tier above it.

Which Social Work Degrees Does CSWE Accredit?

CSWE accredits social work degrees at three levels: its Board of Accreditation is recognized by CHEA to accredit baccalaureate, master's, and practice doctorate social work degree programs. The practice doctorate is the new addition. CSWE ran a pilot from 2021 to 2025 and began accepting applications from additional practice doctorate programs in August 2025. On the other side of the line, CSWE does not accredit PhD programs, associate degree programs, or minors in social work.

Licensing runs on accreditation. Each jurisdiction requires a social work degree from a CSWE-accredited program to sit for a licensing exam, and NASW's advice is the same: hold a degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. An unaccredited BSW or MSW leaves you unable to sit the exam, and an unaccredited bachelor's also closes the advanced standing door. Every program on this site is drawn from the accreditor's directory for that reason.

How Do Social Work Licensure Tiers Match the Degree Levels?

Social work licensure tiers match the degree levels one to one: a bachelor-level license for the BSW, a master's license for the MSW, and a clinical license for the MSW plus supervised practice. ASWB, which writes the exams, stresses that licensing is for all social workers, not just clinical social workers, and most states offer multiple categories of licensure. Its exams come in four categories, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist and Clinical, priced at $230 for the Associate, Bachelors and Masters exams and $260 for the Advanced Generalist and Clinical exams.

Social work license tiers and the degree behind each. Title counts are computed from the ASWB regulatory database export covering the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
Tier Most common title Degree and experience ASWB exam
Bachelor LBSW in 19 states CSWE-accredited BSW, issued in 41 states and the District of Columbia Bachelors, required in 35 states and the District of Columbia
Master's LMSW in 25 states CSWE-accredited MSW Masters
Clinical LCSW in 31 states, LICSW in 8 states and the District of Columbia MSW plus two years of post-master's direct clinical experience Clinical

Two details in that table catch people out. The bachelor tier is not universal: 9 states and Puerto Rico issue nothing at that level, and 6 states, Illinois, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey and Utah, issue a bachelor credential without the ASWB exam. And the clinical tier takes experience as well as a degree: ASWB defines its clinical category as an MSW with two years post-master's direct clinical social work experience, so the MSW alone earns the master's license and the clinical title follows two or more years later. Among first-time takers of the Bachelors exam in 2025, 2,741 sat it and 70.4% passed.

Can You Earn a Social Work Degree Online?

You can earn a social work degree online at every level the accreditor covers, and the share of programs offering it rises sharply with the degree. CSWE notes that many social work programs offer learning options from part- to full-time on-campus to fully online. The directory puts numbers on it: 149 of the 538 accredited BSW programs (27.7%) list an online option, spread across 39 states and Puerto Rico, against 235 of the 350 accredited MSW programs (67.1%). An online social work degree is the norm at the master's level and still the exception at the bachelor's level.

Online does not mean remote from start to finish: the 400 bachelor's and 900 master's field hours happen in an agency on every plan of study, so an online social work degree still needs a placement near home. Online is also recorded separately from part-time, which 330 BSW programs list, and our guide to part-time BSW programs shows how little the two sets overlap. The online programs are compared on the online BSW ranking, and two companion pieces cover the fastest route and the lowest tuition: accelerated online social work degrees and the cheapest online BSW programs.

How Do You Choose Among Social Work Schools?

Choose among social work schools by checking accreditation first, then the level you need, then what differs between accredited programs: cost, field placement network, schedule and the license the state issues. The CSWE directory is the only list that settles the first question. After that, social work schools that look alike on a brochure separate on verified tuition, on whether they list a part-time or online plan, and on how far their agency partners reach. The market is large and steady: the Bureau of Labor Statistics counted about 816,100 social worker jobs in 2025, a May 2025 median wage of $61,780, and growth of 6 percent projected from 2025 to 2035.

This site does that comparison at the bachelor's level: the ranking of the best BSW programs scores every accredited program on published data, the best online BSW programs page narrows it to the 149 with an online option, the state rankings show what is near you, and the comparison tool filters on cost and delivery. Whether the degree pays is argued through in whether a BSW is worth it.
